On the morning of January 26, Beijing time, it was reported that Tencent’s major shareholder, Dutch technology investment company Prosus and its South African parent company Naspers Reductions of up to 30% will be made at corporate offices.

This has led to a further increase in the list of technology companies that have recently made significant layoffs. Last week, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, just announced that it would lay off 12,000 employees.

“We will adapt to changes in the macro environment. For some time,We’ve been working hard to improve our cost structure. “Today we are announcing the elimination of certain positions as we focus on specific areas and cut costs,” a Prosus spokesman said in a statement Wednesday. “

Prosus and Naspers have 15 offices worldwide, the two largest being in Johannesburg and Amsterdam. Prosus and Naspers have approximately 30,000 employees worldwide, most of whom are employed by the companies they invest in. The total number of employees in global offices could not be provided, the spokesman said.

Prosus owns and operates some of the businesses it has invested in, including Brazilian food delivery giant iFood and online classifieds marketplace OLX.The company also holds minority stakes in dozens of companies, including Delivery Hero.

Informed sources said,These businesses are making their own personnel decisions based on different time frames.

There is no specific timetable for the layoffs.
